Abstract

The Department of Education in Puerto Rico offers services to almost 300,000 students, of which more than 100,000 have special needs. Due to the necessity to create alternatives for the improvement of the education, particularly for the children and youths with special needs the Academy for School Directors and Teachers were developed. With the purpose to improve the quality and scope of the preparation of its participants through the development of their skills in order to guarantee the equal educative opportunities of their students. The Academies were evaluated, consistently, throughout the seven years of its duration. The objective of this article is to present the results of the evaluations. At the same time, expose its participants to a variety of experts in the special needs’ areas. It is concluded that an initiative like this should be continued, expanded and adapted, to the circumstances imposed by COVID-19 and/or the creation of an Academy for the School Inclusion.
