Abstract

This study compiled an updated checklist of wildlife species recorded on Isla del Carmen and in Laguna de Términos, Campeche, Mexico, that are included in a risk category under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010. A descriptive documentary review was conducted using the EncicloVida platform, the official NOM-059 list, and scientific and technical literature on regional biodiversity. Only species with records for the study area and a current national risk category were retained. A total of 94 species belonging to six taxonomic groups were identified: amphibians, birds, invertebrates, mammals, fish, and reptiles. Birds comprised the largest proportion of the checklist (57 species; 60.6%), followed by reptiles (21; 22.3%) and mammals (8; 8.5%). The most frequent risk category was subject to special protection (50 species; 53.2%), followed by threatened (26; 27.7%), endangered (17; 18.1%), and probably extinct in the wild (1; 1.1%). The results underscore the ecological importance of the lagoon-island system and the need to conserve connectivity among mangroves, wetlands, coastal dunes, seagrass beds, estuarine waters, and terrestrial habitats. The checklist provides a documentary baseline for taxonomic validation, field monitoring, and the design of conservation and management actions for at-risk wildlife in the southern Gulf of Mexico.
