Abstract

Uca (Petruca) panamensis (Stimpson, 1859) is a fiddler crab characteristic of rocky habitats in the Tropical Eastern Pacific, whose larval morphology has remained unknown. This study provides the first description of the first zoeal stage (Zoea I) and compares its morphological characters with those reported for species of the genera Minuca and Leptuca. We based the description on 16 larvae obtained from an ovigerous female maintained under controlled conditions. The larva had a globose carapace with two dorsal setae, posterolateral faveolate ornamentation, a rostral spine about twice as long as the dorsal spine, and a telson without lateral spines. Morphological comparisons revealed numerous similarities with species of Minuca and Leptuca, particularly in the mouthparts, although differences were observed in the setal formulae of the maxillipeds. These findings provide diagnostic characters for the identification of P. panamensis larvae in zooplankton samples and suggest a marked conservation of larval traits within the family Ocypodidae.
