Abstract

A study was conducted on the in vitro antimicrobial and antiparasitic activity of the essential oil of Cedrela odorata L. The antibacterial assay was performed using Staphylococcus aureus (Rosenbach, 1884) ATCC 25922 and Escherichia coli (Migula, 1895) ATCC 25923 strains. Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas, 1909) epimastigotes (Tulahuen strain) were used for the antiparasitic assay. Regarding the essential oil extracted from the aerial parts of C. odorata, 40 compounds were identified, with eight major compounds observed: β-cadinene (17.39%), di-epi-1,10-cubenol (13.81%), α-epi-muurolol (13.54%), α-cadinol (11.57%), δ-cedrol (6.03%), α-epi-cadinol (5.45%), cis-calamenene (3.26%), and α-muurolene (2.28%). Inhibitory activity against both the bacterial and parasite strains was observed. The results suggest the potential of C. odorata essential oil as a source of bioactive compounds with antimicrobial and antiparasitic applications.
