Abstract

The objective was to identify the gingival histological characteristics in geriatric hypertensive patients with continuous antihypertensive medication who attended a Public Hospital Lima, Peru in 2018. Thirty hypertensive patients whose gingival biopsies were histologically studied using the kerosene technique as well as hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining in order to observe histological changes in the gingival tissue were evaluated. A data collection form was used which included information on age, sex, drug and time of use, as well as the biopsy report (epithelium and connective tissue) of each patient. To perform the inferential analysis, Pearson's Chi2 statistical test was used, with a significance level of 0.05. The results indicate that there was a statistically significant association (p=0.000) between the histological characteristic parakeratosis and the use of Irbesartan. Likewise, no association was found between histological characteristics, sex, age and time of use of antihypertensive drugs; however, it was more frequent in the female sex and in the 75-84 years age group. We conclude that there was a statistically significant association only with the histological characteristic parakeratosis and the use of Irbesartan.
Likewise, no statistically significant association was found between histological characteristics, sex, age and time of antihypertensive use. It is recommended to perform gingival histological studies according to sex and age group in patients using antihypertensive drugs.
