Antibacterial efficacy of Thymus vulgaris (thyme) oil against Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia: In vitro
DOI:
https://doi.org/10.62428/rcvp2024311836Keywords:
Thymus vulgaris, porphyromonas gingivalis, prevotella intermedia, cetylpyridinium chlorideAbstract
The aim was to evaluate in vitro the antibacterial effect of Thymus vulgaris
(Thyme) oil at 100%, 75% and 50% and a control group of Cetylpyridinium
Chloride at 0.05%, on strains of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella
intermedia at 24 hours, 48 and 72 hours. 10 plates were sampled for each bacterial
strain of Porphyromonas gingivalis (ATCC33277) and Prevotella intermedia
(ATCC25611). The culture medium used was blood agar. The technique used
was Kirby Bauer, the inhibition zones of four discs that were placed in each
petri dish were measured, with the concentrations of the essential oil of Thymus
vulgaris at 50, 75 and 100%, as well as Cetylpyridinium Chloride at 0.05%.
at 24, 48 and 72 hours after the respective cultures were done. At 24 hours
the antimicrobial activity on Porphyromonas gingivalis of Cetylpyridinium
Chloride at 0.05% was 10.7 ± 0.27 mm, while with the essential oil of Thymus
vulgaris at concentrations of 100% it was 28.56 ± 0.61 mm, at 75% it was
21.76 ± 1.04 mm, while at 50% it was 14.22 ± 0.76. Significant differences
were found between the antimicrobial activity of Thymus vulgaris essential oil
at 100%, 75%, 50% and Cetylpyridinium Chloride at 0.05% against strains of
Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia. It is recommended to
carry out clinical application research with the use of Thymus vulgaris essential
oil.
