Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the incidence of the coagulating action of prickly pear, tara and mashua in the treatment of water from the
Ichu River in Huancavelica. Water quality monitoring was carried out in the laboratories of the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina [UNALM]. The parameters measured were electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, pH, color, turbidity and sludge volume; continuing the tests of jars with synthetic water of turbidity of 160 UNT. In the first phase the tests were carried out using aluminum sulfate as a primary coagulant and in a second phase aluminum
sulfate was used as a primary coagulant and adding tara gum, prickly pear and mashua as natural polymers to improve their performance. Whose results are, the decantation rate with the aluminum sulfate coagulant was 29 m3/m2//d and the sedimentation speed 0.034 cm/s; adding the tara gum coagulant aid to the water resulted in 34 m3/m2//d and 0.039 cm/s, adding prickly pear gum to the water sample resulted in 30 m3/m2/d and 0.035 cm/s, finally adding the prickly pear starch mashua was 68 m3/m2/d and 0.079 cm/s, respectively. It is concluded that the coagulating action of the tare, prickly pear and mashua, allow to make water drinkable for human consumption.
