Abstract

The worldwide use of pesticides disproportionately increases every day. For this reason, appropriated bioindicator agents are urgently needed. For a suitable environmental risk assessment of freshwater aquatic environment in Peru, employment of biological organism like freshwater planarian Girardia festae (Borelli, 1898) (Tricladida: Dugesiidae) is required. Planarians are main component of limnetic ecosystems, some are wide geographic distributed, sensitive to pollutants, capable of regenerating and easily cultured in laboratory conditions. The aim of the current research was to evaluate the sublethal effects of the insecticide carbofuran on regeneration of G. festae. Planarians were sectioned in three levels (head, middle and tail) by performing two transversal cuts (prepharingeal and postpharingeal amputation) in a dorso-ventral plane. They were individualized in control medium (sterilized tap water) and two dilutions of carbofuran (1.17 mg L-1 and 2.34 mg L-1) in plastic vessels of 30 mL. Ecotoxicological bioassays were concluded at 17 days of exposure until to complete planarian regeneration. The regenerate middle part of the planarians in control medium raised a higher percentage of growth compared to the two concentrations of carbofuran. On the contrary, hormesis in head and tail parts raised a higher percentage of growth in 2.34 mg carbofuran L-1 compared to the control.
