previsíveis, enquanto espécies satélites
comportam-se de forma instável. A dominância de
E. yumaricus confirmada pelo coeficiente de
dominância indica uma possível presença de
competição com M. piraya, contudo vale ressaltar
o comportamento reprodutivo entre as duas
espécies, onde M piraya produz um número
menor de ovos, 9 a 17 (Malta & Varella, 1993),
enquanto E. yumaricus 18 a 26 ovos (Malta &
Varella, 1995), o que pode explicar também a
dominância de E. yumaricus.
O tamanho do hospedeiro, considerado uma
expressão de sua idade, apresenta um conjunto de
fatores tais como: migração do hospedeiro para a
reprodução, que pode causar variações no espectro
alimentar decorrentes da mudança no uso do
habitat; variação nos diferentes itens alimentares
do hospedeiro no decorrer do seu crescimento até a
vida adulta, que são importantes na variação do
número de parasitos (Dogiel, 1961). À medida que
o peixe cresce, ocorrem alterações no seu
comportamento alimentar e reprodutivo, que
podem influenciar na sua fauna parasitária
(Takemoto et al., 1996). S. rhombeus apresenta
diferanças nos itens alimentares em decorência da
idade, onde juvenis se alimentam de insetos,
escamas e fragmentos de nadadeiras, individuos
adultas alimentam-se quase que na totalidade de
peixes (Pizarro, 1998). Além disso, S. rhombeus
apresentou uma grande variação em seu tamanho,
o fato de hospedeiros maiores aliados ao ciclo de
vida dos parasitos que é direto, contribuiu para que
a abundância fosse maior do que nos peixes
menores.
Muitos trabalhos mostram que os parasitos de
peixes nem sempre apresentam variações
quantitativas em relação ao sexo do hospedeiro,
assim como a encontrada em S. rhombeus. Isto
pode ser considerado um reflexo da ausência de
diferenças na biologia e na dinâmica populacional
entre hospedeiros machos e fêmeas (Luque et al.,
1996).
